Christmas Song of the Day #9: 12 Drummers Drumming Like Olympus Upon the Serengeti

16 Dec

Hey you guys, do you still like The Office?  Yep, it was truly awesome back in seasons 2 and 3, and it’s starting to run out of material and outlive the documentary conceit, but the gang can still pull off a hilarious episode.  The Office is quite good with xmas episodes too.  A few years back there was “Christmas Party,” with the office gift exchange where Jim gave Pam the teapot of inside jokes and Meredith gets shit faced and exposes herself.  Hilarious!  This year, if you didn’t see it last week, was “Classy Christmas,” and it was a real return to hilarious form.  More sweetness between Jim and Pam, the return of Holly, Michael’s crazed attempts to throw Holly a new party, Toby’s jury duty, Phyllis’s knit iPad holder for Ryan, and so on.  Check it out on demand or Hulu if you missed it.

But the reason I’m talking about The Office today is Andy Bernard.  Remember the funny bits of the show where we learned about Andy’s awesome past in his college (Cornell…maybe you’ve heard of it?) men’s a cappella group “Here Comes Treble”?  How about a reminder?  Here’s a highlight reel:

And the ‘Nard Dog singing “You Can Call Me Al,” as an audition for Jim and Pam’s wedding.

And, one of may favorites, Andy singing “Take A Chance On Me” with the help of former members of Here Comes Treble  by phone.

Well if you can’t get enough of wacky men’s a cappella groups, and who amongst us can, you might like the artists behind today’s xmas song of the day, Straight No Chaser.  The song of the day for today is their version of “The 12 Days of Christmas,” which made my 09 xmas mixtape.  Mainly because of the group’s awesome incorporation of Toto’s Africa, truly one of the great songs of the 80s, into an xmas song.  Christmas + Toto = crazy awesome.

Here it is:

Go to 1:42 for the Toto part!

And one more from them.  This one’s for Double S.  It’s our relationship theme song (kinda sorta, for fun)!

Straight No Chaser comes straight outta Indiana University.  These guys are popular, and sell out shows across the country around the holidays.  They have two Christmas albums so far, and I gotta say, they’re both pretty catchy.  They also do a mean version of “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch” which is likely making my holiday mix this year.

The dudes in Straight No Chaser look a bit like the ‘Nard dog, don’t they?

Right?

Plus, Straight No Chaser has made their way into neighborhood light displays too.  Even right in my general nabe of West Seattle!   Here is their song “Christmas Can Can” set to lights in a residential neighborhood.    Double S and I still need to fill up the flask with a few nips of whiskey and head over to watch the lights at Charlestown.  They have their own radio station for chrissakes!  Check it out.

Speaking of Double S and I and our wacky xmas activities, last night we did something really weird.  We went on an Argosy boat on the annual Seattle sailing of the Christmas ships.  Did you ever wonder what kind of people went on those ships?  Well, last night it was Double S and I and a bunch of people who seemed to take a night off from going to Dueling Piano bars, watching shows like CSI or Two and a Half Men, putting on extraneous amounts of makeup and calling things ghetto and retarded.  It was at times quite scary and right as the doors were closing I pictured us running out at the last minute.  But it was alright.  Double S and I got our picture taken with Santa and put a few nips of whiskey into our hot chocolates and watched a choir sing xmas songs.  We got asked where we were from by the over excited cruise director, and she looked generally surprised that we were from Seattle.  It was that kind of night.

Stand in the rain outside and hear xmas music and see boats? Or stay inside with the creepy suburban and exurban masses? Verdict: Outside!

They played this song multiple times.  Double S was taunting me with it while I furiously snapped pics of cool lit up Christmas boats!

I have no idea what’s going on in that video, or what the deal is with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.  But, Christmas rock operas…and kitties!

Happy Thursday everybody!

damn! i missed the cruise! that would have been a hoot. you mustn’t undertake such bizarre events with out your friends. support is needed in dealing with that crowd.
And, I frickin’ love the charlestown lights! Before seeing them I was prepared to be underwhelmed (the skeptic that I am) but holy crap, they are amazing!
