‘Cuz it is my favorite holiday. Yep, I’m quoting the Christmas classic recorded by a punk band back in 1981: “Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses. “Christmas Wrapping” is a classic that usually shouldn’t be messed with. Many have tried. The Spice Girls have covered it. The Donnas (Whatever happened to them? Ring ! Ring! Hello? Just a minute. Hey everyone, 2002 is on the phone and it wants it’s band back!) gave it a shot. And someone named Miranda Cosgrove, who is this iCarly character that all the kids talk about, has covered it too. What is the world coming to? Who is iCarly? Darryl will tell you about it.
iCarly? Shesucky! And then there is the Spice Girls version.
OMG. That was worse than I thought it would be. Plus they change the words, which is a party foul. I don’t need to hear about their babies and long plane rides. Boo hoo! Stick to the original, Spice Girls!
None of these are worth much of a listen if you ask me. Just listen to the original. However, a cover version has come along this year which I’m digging hardcore and wanted to share.
So for the xmas song of the day today, to start the short holiday work week (Sweet!), I wanna share this new cover of “Christmas Wrapping.” Here it is, done by the group Summer Camp. I think I’m gonna go ahead and say it’s my favorite new xmas song released this year.
Here is Summer Camp, a cute little indie pop duo from the UK.
The original, of course, was done by The Waitresses in 1981. Here they are.
I had always pictured the lead singer looking a bit like Toni Basil in 1981’s (Hey! Same year!) “Hey Mickey,” which is a classic you should listen to every year, IMHO.
Here is the original “Christmas Wrapping,” of course synchronized to lights, cuz I guess that’s all the rage?
Don’t forget that The Waitresses didn’t just have this Christmas song, they also did “I Know What Boys Like.”
That video is sweet! But the “boys” in it are creee-pee and it seems that they will likely haunt my dreams tonight.
How’s Christmas stacking up for you guys? Got the shopping and crafting and cookie making and other things that commercials tell you to do done? Doing any partying this week? Double S and I just had a fairly rollicking xmas party this past weekend. And even though the volume on my xmas partay holiday mix got turned down at one point (Rude!) during the party, it kinda rocked. I thought people would be all like:
But they weren’t! Instead, everyone was like this!
Not liking Christmas–if you celebrate it of course–is so late 90s/early 00s. Get out there and enjoy it and make it whatever you want. It doesn’t have to be owned by the Christians or summed up by annoying commercials with harried moms and spoiled kids. Speaking of, if you haven’t watched the stop motion animated Christmas special that “Community” did a few weeks back, you must. And if you have watched, this article kinda sums it up perfectly. So get out there and enjoy Christmas the way you want to enjoy it! See you tomorrow!
